FROM THE WIRES....

A French Quarter Bar known for its innovative take on classic cocktails and the reinvention of familiar flavors, is awarded for offering exceptional hospitality and service

March 19, 2024 – Jewel of the South in New Orleans, LA, has been announced as the winner of the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award, part of the third annual North America’s 50 Best Bars awards. Created to recognize the importance of hospitality in the bar experience, the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award is voted on by all 270 members of the North America’s 50 Best Bars Academy, who are asked to name the bar where they have received the single-best hospitality experience within the 18-month voting period. The Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award is the first award in a series of special awards announced in the month leading up to the highly anticipated awards ceremony for North America’s 50 Best Bars 2024, sponsored by Perrier.

Emma Sleight, Head of Content for North America’s 50 Best Bars, says: “Jewel of the South has created a community that provides exceptional hospitality and customer service that always stands out and keeps customers coming back in time and time again. As well as offering that quintessential dose of traditional southern hospitality, they serve up alongside a cocktail menu that is synonymous with Chris Hannah’s love for New Orleans and the bar’s French Quarter location. Located in one of the most influential cocktail cities in the world, Jewel of the South exemplifies what it is to create that magical synergy between exception drinks and exceptional hospitality – providing a warm welcome to every guest that walks through its doors.”

Jewel of the South is a classic New Orleans tavern, reimagined, known for its creative take on classic cocktails and storied history. Jewel of the South is owned by its partners Chris Hannah, Victoria Espinel, and John Stubbs. Located in a renovated 1830 ‘Creole Cottage’ in the heart of the French Quarter, Jewel of the South’s cocktail program is steeped in history, showcasing classic techniques with innovative seasonal flavors. The award-winning cocktails on the menu focus on riffs that are showcased through Southern cocktail history including The French 75, The Jewel Sazerac, and the Brandy Milk Punch. The cocktails on the menu emphasize historic ingredients that play a part in New Orleans culture as well as Hannah's vast industry knowledge. The cocktail program is accompanied by a kitchen that offers indulgences with its weekend caviar service and a menu of elevated British pub fare. At Jewel of the South, the drinks program and ambiance offer the opportunity to soak in the city’s past while simultaneously sipping on the future.

Chris Hannah, Partner and Bartender, Jewel of the South, says: “Winning the Michter's Art of Hospitality Award is such a thrilling recognition, and coming from an area in our country where we pride ourselves on exactly that, it's especially fantastic. Personally, I'm more of a fan of team awards, and this award, to me, is a team award. There are several times where I'll find myself pulled aside while I'm randomly about town, by friends and strangers alike, and they tell me how much they enjoyed their experience at Jewel of the South and how well taken care of they were. I don't often get to disclose such pleasantries to our team. So I'm even more excited to reveal to our staff that we've won this amazing award for literally what we emphasize to them every day: that our most important asset here at Jewel of the South is hospitality.

Matt Magliocco, Executive Vice President, Michter’s Distillery, says: “Congratulations to Chris Hannah, Victoria Espinel, John Stubbs, Paul Greagoff and the entire team at Jewel of the South for this wonderful recognition.  We join in celebrating the Jewel of the South team on a great honor for their establishment and the New Orleans bar community as a whole.”

The North America’s 50 Best Bars 2024 awards ceremony will take place at the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. North America’s 50 Best Bars aims to provide consumers with an exceptional list of expert-approved drinking destinations across North America.
