WINE REVIEW: 2017 Erath Pinot Gris, Oregon ($14)

andychalk

by Andrew Chalk

Appearance: Light straw

Nose: Light nose of forest floor;

Palate: Yellow apples, cantaloupe, white peach. Bracing phenolic backbone. Minerality. Medium acid.

I have been disappointed in pinot gris from Oregon over the years, maybe the result of drinking too many industrial-grade examples. I welcomed the shift towards chardonnay in the state. This pinot gris is an exception. It has some Alsatian characteristics such as its minerality and firm acidity (which could be higher still). With Thanksgiving approaching I would pair this wine with the turkey.
