Of all sweet wines, perhaps the most engaging is Port, the king of Portuguese wine. Of all the varieties of Port, perhaps the most accessible, both in terms of taste and the pocketbook, is tawny port. It is a style that is ready to drink out of the bottle. Once opened, a bottle will last months stored in the refrigerator.

This wine, from the leading port house Dow’s, yielded the following tasting note:

Appearance: Medium, chocolate brown that is translucent in the glass.

Nose: Nuts, figs.

Palate: Sweet, but with good acid that prevents cloying. Nut and fig flavors. Well balanced. A good example of the style that is recommended.
