WINE REVIEW: Harken 2021 Chardonnay ‘Barrel Fermented’, California ($15)

by Andrew Chalk

Appearance: Medium gold;

Nose: Pear and green apple;

Palate:Vibrant fruit flavor framed with new French oak. Chew on this and a subtle phenolic backbone emerges. Malolactic fermentation was completed, however the character of this wine is assertive and lean. Winemaker Adam Popp explained this to me as the result of using some fruit from Monterey, which had high acidity, he explained.
